Love, Told By John Legend

Disclaimer: Marriage is work and at times messy, dirty work. No marriage is perfect because human beings are inherently flawed and that’s okay. But I believe that staying in love is a choice and every day you choose to remain in love with your partner.

You know when you have a moment of clarity? For me my divine aha moments generally come while I’m on the drive home, music blaring. Today John Legend’s ‘All of Me’ was playing and I recalled the first time I ever heard that song and thought how absolutely, heartbreakingly, romantic it was. As I sang along, I thought about my husband of 6 years who has been my partner for going on 11.

My husband who has supported me on every path [seriously, I love you because this spiritual path is a damn doozy].
Through various jobs and career changes.
As I grew and transformed and delved into different hobbies, interests, and obsessions.
While I searched for what “aligned with me” in the current form of who I was at that time.

What would I do without your smart mouth?
Drawing me in, and you kicking me out
You've got my head spinning, no kidding, I can't pin you down
What's going on in that beautiful mind
I'm on your magical mystery ride
And I'm so dizzy, don't know what hit me, but I'll be alright

My husband, who makes a case better than any lawyer on why I should make the bed every morning.
Who once told me “you are really bossy you know that” after a few glasses.
Who always teases me about how terrible I am at math.
Who is the worst Instagram photo taker ever. E v e r.
Who tells me I keep him young.

How many times do I have to tell you
Even when you're crying you're beautiful too
The world is beating you down, I'm around through every mood
You're my downfall, you're my muse
My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues
I can't stop singing, it's ringing, in my head for you

My husband who has never once told me my emotions, and trust me guys and gals there are a lot of them, are too much for him to handle.
That my tears made me weak.
That my seemingly life-or-death need to verbalize all my inner thoughts, ramblings and musings was a negative trait.
That my vast emotional range made me dramatic.
That the way my mind worked was anything other than something unique that he loved about me.

'Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I'll give my all to you
You're my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I'm winning
'Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you

I put the disclaimer early on because our marriage is not always a John Legend song and I’ll never pretend it is. We disagree, we argue and we have seen each other through our highs and lows, at our best and at our worst. But the drive home today reminded me how fortunate I was to have someone in my life that thinks all my imperfections are perfect and he deserves all of me.
